Johannes Brutsch was the founder of the Brutsch line in South Carolina.
When I was young, my father did not know Johannes' name. All he knew from family stories is that Johannes' grave was supposedly marked with the axle from a model-T, so we always referred to him as 'Axle-T Brutsch'. Years later, at the church where his daughter is buried, we found these markers nearby.
My original information was obtained from a family history compiled by Mrs. Carl Edwards, of Selma, AL, in August, 1976.
Johannes Brutsch was born 4 Nov 1824, in Switzerland, and died 7 Dec 1898, in Sumter, SC.
His parents were Michael Brutsch, b. 26 Sep 1802, d. 1869, and Elizabeth Brutsch, b. 16 Nov 1803, d. 1871.
Michael's parents were Hans Brutsch, b. 1764, and Anna Ruh.
Johannes was first married to Ursula Brutsch, b. 7 May 1829, d. 16 Apr 1864.
Ursula's parents were Konrad Brutsch, b. 25 Feb 1805, d. 1871, and Verena Peter, b. 17 Sep 1807, d. 1881.
Johannes and Ursula had two daughters:
By 1880, he was married to Mary E. Brutsch (1880 Census), who was either:
Johannes and Mary lived in Swimming Pens, SC; Johannes was the Post-Master, and they had three children:
Gustavus Brutsch, b. 1869 1880 Census
Frank K. Brutsch, b. 1871 1880 Census
Mary U. Brutsch, b. 1879 1880 Census
My uncle, Howard Brutsch, of Hanahan, SC, has at least one picture of Johannes, but I have been unable to obtain a copy.
